Each member plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth orchestration of activities that aim to provide the best care possible for the patient. Dr. Dowlatshahi considers himself an equal member of this care team.

Joseph Upton III, senior partner

Dr. Sammy carried out his Fellowship training under the world-renowned Hand and Microsurgeon Dr. Joseph Upton and has been mentored by him for over a decade.

Dr. Upton has a greater than 40-year experience in taking care of complex reconstructive surgical problems and has an international reputation for his pioneering contributions in reconstructive microsurgery and hand surgery. He is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and continues to lecture internationally. Dr. Sammy has assumed the clinical care of Dr. Upton’s adult patients since his transition to a mainly teaching and research capacity. Dr. Sammy regularly consults with Dr. Upton with regards to more complex cases. Dr. Upton himself is available for private clinical consultation by request.

Dr. Sammy and his sister

Both Dr. Emmilia Dowlatshahi (MD,PhD) and Dr. Sammy Dowlatshahi (MD) were born in England, and grew up in Canada and Germany, studied in English, French and German, and are fluently multilingual. Both went to medical school at the prestigious Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany. After medical school, they each pursued their dreams.


Dr. Emmilia went to the Netherlands where she completed her PhD in Dermatology, followed by an internal medicine and dermatology residency, and a fellowship in dermatologic surgery / Mohs surgery at the Erasmus Medical School, Rotterdam, a center of academic excellence in Europe for dermatology. She currently practices in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Dr. Sammy pursued his plastic surgery residency training at the University of Freiburg Medical School (Germany) and at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (United States). He then underwent fellowship training in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He currently practices in Boston, Milton and Cambridge, Massachusetts.


As siblings, they have always been very close, and continue to learn from one another, including consulting on difficult cases that span both Dermatology and Plastic Surgery specialties, such as nail disorders and challenging, serious types of skin cancers affecting the face and extremities.

Make an Appointment

Dr. Sammy will initially see you at one of his office locations in Boston, Milton, Quincy or Cambridge. He will discuss your condition with you in detail and address your concerns. Depending on the type of surgery you require, Dr. Sammy operates at BIDMC in Boston, the New England Baptist Hospital, Milton Hospital and Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. He also offers WALANT (Wide-Awake surgery under Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet).
